Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
