The UK and US have signed a important trade agreement that will preserve zero levies on British medicine shipments entering the American market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to boost expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the NHS. This move ensures that duties on these vital goods will stay at zero for a timeframe of the next three years.

This development comes after recent statements to significantly raise tariffs on branded pharmaceutical products, with increases floated as high as one hundred percent.

"This agreement with the UK reinforces the international landscape for innovative medicines and brings long-overdue equity to American-British pharmaceutical trade," an announcement said.

Commercial Significance

Medicines represent one of the the United Kingdom's biggest exports to the US, which is easily the biggest destination for large companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics reveal that in the one-year period to the end of the third quarter, the UK shipped medicines valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This value represented nearly one-fifth of all goods exports in that period.

"This agreement protects work, boosts investment and paves the way for the UK to become a global hub for life sciences," a minister remarked.

Key British Pledges

The agreement involves several key pledges from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will increase the affordability limit at which it judges new therapies to be too expensive by twenty-five percent.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to double total public funding on drugs from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The percentage drug companies must return to the NHS to control costs will be capped at fifteen percent. Last year, rebates topped twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

The deal comes amid a protracted row between the sector and the ministers over medicine costs and approval rates.

The disagreement were intensified by assertions that American patients were charged significantly more for the equivalent treatments than patients in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several major drug company projects in the UK have been paused or cancelled, while substantial investments have been pledged toward US facilities.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS needed to invest a greater share on medicines, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a proportion of its total funding over the last ten years.
