European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
