Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.
The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."
