Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

Astronaut during spaceflight — **The scientist and activist**, a bioastronautics research scientist, was aboard the automated spacecraft in Spring 2025.

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the experience, such as increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
